Councillor Development Strategy
Councillor Development Strategy

Destination 2036 identified the need for action to ensure quality governance in councils to create stronger local government. One of the key actions, for which the Division of Local Government is responsible for coordinating, is to develop and implement a Councillor Development Strategy. The Strategy aims to ensure that all NSW councillors elected in September 2012 have timely access to the information needed to understand and undertake their roles and responsibilities effectively.

The Strategy has been developed in partnership with the Local Government Association of NSW and the Shires Association of NSW (the Associations) and comprises a number of components.

Hit the Ground Running – The key workshop for new and returning councillors

To deliver on this action, the Division of Local Government, with the support of the LGSA, is holding a series of free Councillor Workshops across NSW following the local government elections in September for all councillors and general managers.

The 30 Councillor Workshops held around the State will help new and returning councillors hit the ground running following the September elections. The workshops will provide crucial information on roles, responsibilities and tools to ensure councillors have the skills and knowledge to be effective.

The Councillor Workshops program flier can be accessed here

Registrations are now open and can be accessed by councils here

Councillor Handbook

The Division and the Associations have jointly reviewed and updated the Councillor Handbook (formerly Guide) for councillors. The Handbook outlines in more detail the topic areas to be covered at the Councillor Workshops (see above). It also includes information about financial management responsibilities of councils, a skills and knowledge checklist and information about where to find additional resources.

Councillor Induction and Professional Development Guide - A Guide for Councils

The The Councillor Induction and Professional Development - A Guide for Councils publication aims to assist councils to develop and implement induction and continuing professional development programs for councillors. It provides information about how to develop and implement these programs as well as checklists of what to include in each.
