Councils conducting their own elections
Local Government Elections 2012

Section 287 of the Local Government Act 1993 (the Act) provides that an ordinary election for councillors is to be held on the second Saturday in September every 4 years. In 2012 the elections will be on 8 September.

Last year the Act was amended to enable councils to administer their own elections, constitutional referendums and polls. However if councils wish to engage the New South Wales Electoral Commission (NSWEC) or another service provider to conduct these elections they may.

Councils intending to use the services of the NSWEC had to make this decision by 30 November 2011.

The following councils have resolved to conduct their own elections, referendums and polls in 2012.

The Council of the City of Botany Bay
Cessnock City Council
Coffs Harbour City Council
Fairfield City Council
Gunnedah Shire Council
Kempsey Shire Council
Lake Macquarie City Council
Lane Cove Municipal Council
Maitland City Council
Newcastle City Council
Penrith City Council
Port Stephens Council
Shoalhaven City Council
Sutherland Shire Council

For further details on council administered elections see the Guide to the Election Process prepared by the Division of Local Government.
