Owning a dog or cat in NSW
NSW Companion Animals
The NSW Companion Animals Act is designed to benefit dogs and cats and their owners, as well as the wider community.
All dogs and cats must be permanently identified by the age of 12 weeks or when sold or given away (whichever comes first) and lifetime registered before the age of 6 months.
Local councils administer and enforce the Companion Animals Act which greatly assists the return of lost and injured animals to their owners. It provides NSW councils with a system to manage dogs and cats for the benefit of all in the community.
If you want to know more about being a responsible pet owner contact your local council.
Information can also be found on the
Companion Animals website.
